The Design
Naval architects Seaton-Neville have designed this twin engine 53 footer which is in the opinion of the architects "a sailboat that motors well".

The Hoku Kai has a solid fiberglass hull and mahogany-cored deck. The interior teak joinery and glass work is first rate. Standard gear includes Barient winches, 500-gallon water and 800-gallon fuel tanks integral to the hull, self-furling mast and jib furling for short-handed cruising. An 8KW generator is standard. Air conditioning, refrigeration and electronic systems are installed.

The Accomodation
A spacious fly bridge with helm seat and a comfortable and secure settee aft are pleasant features of the Hoku Kai. The pilothouse provides a second helm for all weather cruising with a good field of vision, as well as space for extensive electronics and chart stowage. The main saloon is spacious and elegant, with L-shaped settee and table to starboard, and an entertainment center to port. The galley was designed for cooking under sail, with two sizeable iceboxes, electric stove and oven.

The aft-stateroom has a queen-sized berth on a pedestal, a large hanging locker, vanity, and a private head compartment with a stall shower. Forward of the main saloon are two guest staterooms to starboard and in the bow, each with upper/lower berths and hanging lockers. A guest head compartment is to port, with an enclosed stall shower.

Performance
Power is provided by twin Ford Lehman Super 90HP diesel engines. She cruises comfortably around 8.5 knots at 2,100 RPM under power. At this speed the range is approximately 1,000 miles under power alone. The Hoku Kai's good sailing characteristics vastly extends this range. On deck, the combination of self-tailing winches, self-stowing mast and jib furling make sail handling simple. The sailing capability is enhanced by a full keel underbody and a large sail area which measures 1,354 sq. ft. You will find that she sails in the lightest of breeze to the seven seas.
